Guesthouse 102 is located in Nybyen, in the upper part of the Longyear Valley. Nybyen was founded in 1946-1947 in association with mine 2B. The settlement served as accommodation for the miners. There where 72 men in every barrack, two people sharing one room. This was a major improvement compared to the 4-bed rooms that had been normal in the old Sverdrup city, on the opposite side of the valley. Nybyen had a mess hall, bathing facilities, a laundry and for one period of time, the only shop in town was placed here.
Every barrack was given a specific number and barrack 102 held the best standard of all the residences in Nybyen. Among other things it had a sink in every room. It became a popular place and so the miners that stayed here where veterans who also earned the most and had cash “on account”. Soon it was given the nickname “Millionærheimen” or “The Millionaires Home”.
In 2001, barrack 102 was changed in to a guesthouse, and the standard from the time of the miners has been kept. Now 102 has become a resort for tourists from all over world, scientists and north pole explorers.
The distance from Guesthouse 102 to the city centre is about 2 km. We have bicycles for rent.
Gallery Svalbard is also located in Nybyen. It displays both permanent and temporary art exhibitions and concerts. There is also an art centre at Gallery Svalbard where artists produce handicraft items as well as other artwork. They have a small café where you can get hot and cold drinks and some snacks.
